Goal Setting – Know Your Why
As the year ends, are you thinking about your goals? Most people reflect deeply as each year comes to a close. They think about the goals they did and didn’t accomplish, along with the goals they want to set for the New Year. Goal setting is a top thought for most people, but not always a top priority.
When you look back at 2017, how do you feel about where you’re at based upon where you thought you would be? What do you wish you would have done differently, and what are you feeling great about that you did accomplish?
When looking ahead to 2018, wouldn’t it be exciting if you set goals that inspired you to jump out of bed every morning and take action? Goals that truly resonate with who you are, rather than goals that you think you “should” have, based upon society or other people’s opinions?
The most important aspect of goal setting is to know your “why.” The why is what gives your goals clarity, purpose and power. You need to be clear as to why you want to achieve each individual goal. What makes each one significant and important? How will it make you feel to achieve each goal? How will achieving each goal change you and change your life? Make sure to answer each of those questions as you make your list for the New Year.
In addition, there’s also a planning phase to goal setting, adding action steps, timelines, deadlines and so forth. Don’t just think about your goals (keeping them in your head), or scribble them down on a sheet of paper. Really PLAN them out with clarity and intent. The process takes time, but it’s so important and well worth the effort if you want to take your life to the next level.
